Utah Microblading Aftercare: Step-by-Step Guide for Perfect Healing

Welcome to your complete guide on microblading aftercare, brought to you by 3D Brows in Draper, Utah. I'm Patty Willardsen, founder of 3D Brows and a nationally recognized permanent makeup artist with over 20 years of experience. I've performed thousands of procedures and trained hundreds of artists, earning awards like ASCP's "Best Microblading Training" multiple years running.

Proper aftercare is crucial—it ensures vibrant, crisp results that last 1-3 years. Studies from the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP) show that following evidence-based guidelines reduces risks like infection or pigment loss.

This guide draws from industry standards (SPCP, AAM), client feedback, and my expertise. We'll focus on moist healing (recommended for most, especially in dry climates) while noting dry healing options.

Why Aftercare Matters So Much

Microblading creates tiny wounds to deposit pigment. Your skin heals in layers, locking in color.

  • Poor aftercare → up to 50% pigment loss, patchiness, or blurring.
  • Great aftercare → even healing, natural strokes, minimal fading.

In Utah's dry air, extra moisture prevents cracking and supports retention.

The Microblading Healing Process: Day by Day

Healing takes 4-6 weeks total, with critical care in the first 10-14 days. Here's what to expect:

Days 1-2: Bold and Fresh

  • Brows look 30-50% darker (oxidation + lymph fluid).
  • Mild redness or tenderness normal.
  • What to do: Gently blot excess fluid every 15-60 minutes (first day). Wash morning/night with gentle antibacterial soap. Pat dry, apply rice-grain ointment.

Days 3-5: Darkening Peak

  • Color intensifies as scabs form thinly.
  • Possible tightness or mild itch.
  • What to do: Continue twice-daily wash + thin ointment. No picking!

Days 6-10: Scabbing and Flaking

  • Thin flakes appear—do NOT pick (pulls out pigment).
  • Brows may look patchy temporarily.
  • What to do: Keep moisturized lightly. Itch? Pat gently.

Days 11-14: Lightening Phase

  • Flakes fall off; brows appear lighter/faded (normal—color returns).
  • What to do: Resume gentle cleansing if scabs gone.

Days 15-30: Color Bloom

  • Pigment settles; brows soften to natural shade.
  • Full results visible around week 6 (perfecting touch-up time).

Week 6+: Long-Term Maintenance

  • Color stable. Protect from sun for longevity.

Every client's healing varies by skin type, age, and lifestyle. Oily skin may fade faster; dry skin retains better with moisture.

Step-by-Step Aftercare Routine (Moist Healing Recommended)

We prefer moist healing—backed by modern wound care principles—for better retention and less scabbing.

Daily Routine (Days 1-10)

  1. Wash gently — Morning and night: Use fragrance-free antibacterial soap (e.g., Dial Gold or Cetaphil). Pat with fingertips, rinse lukewarm, pat dry with clean tissue.
  2. Apply ointment sparingly — Rice-grain amount on clean Q-tip. Spread thinly—one direction. Too much suffocates skin!
  3. Blot if needed — First few hours post-procedure: Remove lymph with clean tissue.

Utah-Specific Tips for Dry Climate

  • Dry air dehydrates faster → more tightness or cracking.
  • Extra hydration: Apply ointment 2-3 times/day if dry (not oily skin).
  • Use humidifier at night.
  • Avoid windy/dry outdoor activities first week.

Common Aftercare Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

These errors cause most patchy or faded results:

  • Over-applying ointment → Clogs pores, pushes out pigment.
  • Picking/scabbing → Removes color, risks scarring.
  • Getting brows wet early → Sweat, showers, pools blur strokes.
  • Sun exposure → Fades pigment quickly (use SPF 30+ after week 2).
  • Using makeup/products → Introduces bacteria or irritants.
  • Heavy exercise → Sweat acts like exfoliant.

Avoid them for flawless healing!

What to Avoid for 10-14 Days

  • Water immersion (pools, saunas, long showers)
  • Sweating (gym, hot yoga)
  • Makeup on brows
  • Touching/picking
  • Exfoliants, retinol, acids
  • Direct sun/tanning

After day 14: Resume normal routine gently.

Signs of Normal vs. Problematic Healing

Normal:

  • Mild redness/itch
  • Thin flaking
  • Temporary lightness

Contact us immediately if:

  • Severe swelling/pus
  • Excessive pain
  • Signs of infection

Rare with proper hygiene—SPCP reports low risks in clean conditions.

Long-Term Care for Lasting Brows

  • Use SPF daily (UV fades pigment)
  • Avoid oils/exfoliants on brows
  • Touch-up every 12-24 months
  • Moisturize skin overall
